CDC School Philosophy

CDC Philosophy

The UCI Child Development Center School was founded on research showing that multi-modal therapy for children with Attention Deficit-Hyperactivy Disorder (ADHD) has been found to be effective. The CDC program includes four treatment components based on this research. The most common treatment for ADHD and Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) is with stimulant medication. However, even the manufacturer's instructions for the most commonly used medication, Ritilan (methylphenidate), recommends multi-modal treatment. The major components of the treatment are:

  • Classroom intervention
  • Social skills training
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy in a group setting
  • Parent training

CDC Goals

The goal of the program is to provide intensive school-based intervention aimed at transitioning the child back into their local public or private school after a year to two years, having equipped the child and their parents to deal with typical issues facing ADHD children such as:

  • Homework
  • Organization skills
  • Problem solving in dealing with day to day life challenges
  • Social interaction with peers and adults
  • Interacting with the child's teacher and obtaining feedback
  • Monitoring issues facing the child
  • Collaborating with the teacher and support staff
